Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant, has created an AI-powered diagnosis algorithm by Damo Academy, its research institute which trained the AI system using data samples from more than 5,000 confirmed cases of Coronavirus.

While Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from common cold to severe infections such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). And the common signs of infection include fever, cough, respiratory symptoms, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The AI-powered diagnosis system is capable of identifying coronavirus cases with around 96% accuracy. Albeit, the identification happens after a computerized tomography scan, based on the latest research.

Alibaba's foray into AI Diagnosis Systems

The AI diagnosis system is certainly not Alibaba's first foray into combating health-related crisis with the help of AI. Damo Academy researchers have previously developed an AI-powered health service tool that provides information on the SARS-CoV-2, which was deployed by the government of Zhejiang province on January 27, 2020.

The system is fully capable of providing answers to most inquiries regarding the pandemic through the mobile app.

How the AI-powered Diagnosis System Works?

The AI diagnosis algorithm was trained using sample data from over 5,000 confirmed Coronavirus cases, making the system capable of identifying differences in CT scans between people infected with the virus and those with mere viral pneumonia with an accuracy of about 96%.

And the algorithm includes latest treatment guidelines based on recently published research, and the model was first deployed on Beijing's Xiaotangshan Hospital, completed in 2003 to deal with the SARS crisis.

The new AI diagnosis system would be adopted in over 100 hospitals in the provinces of Hubei, Guangdong and Anhui, according to Alibaba.

Disease recognition process using the AI diagnosis is completed within 20 seconds, which feat is quite plausible, and the provided guidelines for treatment will ensure that those diagnosed for coronavirus will get immediate treatment.
