The next update of Ubuntu Linux v20.10 has been scheduled for release, with a development cycle of 25-week and major event milestones such as kernel freezes, feature freezes, UI freezes, final freezes, and eventually the final release.

While Ubuntu 20.10 follows on the heels of Ubuntu 20.04, which as LTS release will get major updates and improvements until 2030, and the life cycle of Ubuntu 20.04 included the 27-week release schedule.

Canonical has continued with its tradition of naming Ubuntu releases by appropriate adjective and animal-derived name starting with the same alphabet. As such, Ubuntu 20.10 as the successor to 20.04 with the alphabet ‘F’ for "Focal Fossa", follows with ‘G’ and after several name suggestions, including: Gaudy Gaur, Gentle Gorilla, and Gallant Gazelle, it eventually settled for ‘Groovy Gorilla.’

Ubuntu 20.10 has been revealed as "Groovy Gorilla" with a development cycle of 25-week and event milestones such as UI freezes, feature freezes, kernel freezes, final freezes, and the final release on October 22, 2020.



The release notes, however did not specify any new features, but as expected most of the Ubuntu 20.10 components are marked as ‘To Be Continued’ and may mean the continuation of the same features as in 20.04 LTS.

Ubuntu 20.10 "Groovy Gorilla" Release Signup



The signup sheet is intended to be used for planning the release milestone tasks, with the Alpha and Beta 1 milestones haven been replaced with Testing Weeks 1, which are organized ad hoc at this point.

After Feature Freeze 5, all members of the Ubuntu release team will participate in Feature Freeze Exception reviews.

And after Final Beta 1, the members of the release team are expected to participate in Bug fix reviews in their respective area of expertise.
